The Edo State Police Command has retrieved N300,000 (approximately £145) allegedly extorted from a furniture maker in Benin City by officers from the Oba Market Area Command.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the recovery was prompted by a viral social media video shared by a local influencer, which claimed the artisan was coerced into handing over the money.
The statement confirmed that the implicated officers have been identified, the sum has been returned to the victim, and the officers are currently detained, awaiting disciplinary action in accordance with police regulations.
The Command has also implemented strict administrative measures at the Oba Market Area Command to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, encouraged the public to report any officer misconduct to the Public Complaints Bureau or the Complaints Response Unit via two dedicated hotlines: 08150999335 and 08100389992.
The Command reiterated its dedication to integrity and accountability in policing, expressing gratitude to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, AIG Salman Dogo, for his efforts in fostering transparent and responsible policing in the zone.
