NAPTIP arrests suspected human trafficker in Benin

The National Agency for the Prohibition of trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested one Iyamu Nosa Godwin, 45, over alleged human trafficking in Edo State.

The suspect, who resides at Uselu quarter in Benin City, was said to have been arrested on Sunday morning by the operatives of the agency with the support of security agents following a report of his activities by one of his victims.

It was gathered that the suspect specialised in the business of trafficking young girls through Benin-Lagos-Senkansi-Burkina Faso-Mali routes.

It was furthered gathered that the suspect who hails from Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state, first travelled to Senegal in 1993 as a barber but later ventured into the business of human trafficking.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, the Commander, NAPTIP Benin zonal office, Nduka Nwanwenne, said the suspect usually took his victims to the shrine where oath of secrecy would be administered on them before embarking on the journey. According to him, the suspect allegedly collects a service charge of N500,000 per victim, before being sold to prospective customers at the destination points. He said the suspect recently recruited four girls and trafficked them to Burkina Faso where he engaged them in prostitution.
