The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Benin Branch has expressed disgust and appalled at the recent attack on its members, particularly the brutal assault on Israel Idahosa, Esq. on Thursday, 18th day of July 2024, at the Benin Bar secretariat, by a group of marauding party men who claim to be supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while performing their lawful business at the Benin Bar secretariat.

The mob of protesters allegedly led by Mr Tony Kabaka while engaging in a protest suddenly stormed the NBA premises through Sapele Road and descended on Mr Israel Idahosa just because he wore a cap bearing the name of Mr Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.

In a statement by the NBA Benin Branch Chairman  Nosa Francis Edo-Osagie and the secretary  Festus Osagie Usiobafo strongly condemn the unprovoked, senseless and cowardly act, which is a clear violation of human rights and the rule of law.

They said its members, who are merely carrying out their professional duties, should not be subjected to harassment, intimidation, or violence.

While the NBA remains a non-partisan and apolitical organization, its membership is diverse and inclusive, comprising individuals from various political backgrounds and beliefs.

The statement further said the NBA’s focus is on promoting the rule of law, justice, and human rights and not on advancing any political agenda.

They, however, call on all relevant authorities to investigate this incident immediately and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Take concrete steps to ensure the safety and security of its members and Protect the rights of legal practitioners to practice law without fear or hindrance.

NBA said it will not stand aloof while its members are attacked and intimidated. However, they urge members to be calm and go about their usual business as the issue has since been reported to the police for investigation, even as the leadership tinker with its own internal security measures.

The leadership of the Edo State APC has, in different Fora, denied its members’ involvement in any form of thuggery on the said Thursday.
