‘Nigeria Jealously Protects Religious Freedom’ – FG Replies US

The Nigeria Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed says “Nigeria jealously protects religious freedom as enshrined in the country’s constitution”

Mr Mohammed was replying to the United States which added Nigeria as a country with severe religious violations.

The Minister denies religious freedom violation allegation, saying the country “takes seriously any infringement in this regard”

He said the US included Nigeria on the list as a result of an “honest disagreement between the two nations on the causes of violence in Nigeria”

”Nigeria does not engage in religious freedom violation, neither does it have a policy of religious persecution. Victims of insecurity and terrorism in the country are adherents of Christianity, Islam and other religions,” the Minister said.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo disclosed via his Twitter on Monday evening that Nigeria, among other countries, has been designated as a “country of particular concern” for religious freedom.
