A student of Auchi Polytechnics was on Thursday arrested by men of the Nigerian police force for wearing a gold necklace.
The student who simply identified himself as Stanley was stopped at Okhoro junction in Benin city and was ordered to come down for a search.
The policemen accused him of being a scammer after seeing his sisters and his friends international numbers on his phone book.
He was also called a cultist for wearing an attractive wrist watch and necklace before taking him to New Benin police Station.
The student who lamented his ordeal to NAIJA CENTER NEWS said he had to bail himself with N2000 before he was allowed to leave.
Stanley said “I was inside the bus coming from new Benin and they stopped the bus. The policemen asked me to come down and I did,then they asked me where I got my gold and my phone from and I answered that I bought it
“I explained I am a student and showed them my Id card and they went through my pictures,my whatsapp, bbm and Facebook. They saw international number of my sister in Spain and my friend in Germany and they said I was a yahoo boy and took me to the station.
“They wouldn’t allow me to call them or even write to them. Then they saw my Facebook with Jordan Judge and said I use it for fraud too even with my pictures, they said I could claim I am a black American. We argued and argued and they were going to throw me inside the cell but at the end,they said I must pay something before they let me go.
“I even begged the one in the office in charge of statements and he didn’t respond. Then I gave them N2,000 before I was allowed to go home.
”
Amafe Jessica, a resident of Benin who also gave an account of his colleague who was arrested because he had a laptop in his car said” my colleague was arrested because of laptop in his car, meanwhile he is a senior lecturer with university of Benin, an Engineer to be precise.when has it become a crime to carry laptop to the office? We have a long way to go in our society, I really do not know where President Buhari will start from, because most of the sector are so corrupt.
Though new Benin police station is worst in Edo, this is December and they are hunting for money ad if they don’t earn salaries at the end of the month.Some stay at soul to soul building at new Benin, total filling station, mission road close to FCMB. Some uses red bus to patrol looking for customers.
