Nigerian Police commence murder investigation after alleged suicide of pregnant woman in Benin
Nigerian Police have commenced an investigation into the alleged suicide of a pregnant woman in Benin City.
Investigators have arrested the victim's husband over his alleged involvement.
Mrs. Cynthia Emmanuel, 27, was reported to have committed suicide on Saturday night, 16 July 2022, in their residence at Aduwawa in Benin City.
According to reports, the police were called after the woman allegedly hanged herself in her room.
The woman had been released from her dangling when the police arrived at the scene, Standard Gazette gathered.
She was immediately evacuated to the mortuary for autopsy.
The reason Cynthia's husband, Emmanuel Vincent Umoru, was arrested is unknown to the Gazette, but it is speculated that the police suspect foul play.
It is gathered that the couple had had disagreements for some time, resulting in domestic violence.
The Edo State police public relations officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident, said the police took the husband into custody due to some information that got to the police.
He said the police would ensure an extensive investigation into the incident and urged the people to be calm.
Some observers appealed to the police to ensure a diligent investigation towards unraveling the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
