A shocking incident has surfaced involving rogue Nigerian police officers who are currently evading capture after allegedly abducting and extorting N29.9 million (£26, 103) from an unsuspecting motorist.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, fell prey to the officers on Wednesday, 24 January 2024.
According to Harrison Gwamnishu, a concerned citizen assisting the victim in liaising with the police, the incident unfolded when the victim, en route to his building site, was ambushed by officers dressed in black and armed with AK-47s equipped with double magazines.
The criminal officers reportedly falsely examined the victim’s phone, including his bank account, and upon discovering a substantial balance, coerced him into transferring the entire amount to two provided bank accounts – one with Access Bank and the other with Money Point.
Harrison Gwamnishu, detailing the harrowing experience, explained, “They took him round Abuja, and then to an unknown destination. At one point, he was scared. They checked his phone and his wallet. They saw his account balance and ordered him to send all the money to the account numbers they provided for him. They gave him two account numbers.”
In an attempt to secure his release, the victim reached out to friends who, out of fear, sent varying amounts ranging from N1 million to N3 million. The total ransom paid by the victim and his friends amounted to N29,000,000.
The victim clarified that he was not apprehended for any offence. The officers traced to the Special Tactical Squad (STS), a unit created by the previous Inspector General of Police to combat crime, used a white van linked back to their office during the incident.
Harrison Gwamnishu highlighted the lack of official complaints or statements taken from the victim, emphasizing that the officers forced him to record a video falsely incriminating himself in fraudulent activities, cultism, or armed robbery.
Expressing concern over the tarnished image of the Nigerian police, the poster on social media urged the Force to reform by addressing the root causes of such misconduct among officers.
As the rogue officers remain on the run, both the FCT command and Police Headquarters have launched an investigation into the matter.
Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed on Saturday, 27 January, that the headquarters had taken over the investigation, assuring that justice would be served.
He posted on his Twitter account, “The victims and Harrison came to my office on Friday, and we have commenced the investigation into the case. Justice must be served.”
