Police in the Ogun state have confirmed that nine persons were injured in a gas explosion over the weekend at a steel company in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The explosion was said to have occurred at Phoenix Steel Mills in Ogijo.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday and added that the victims of the blast were factory workers.
Odutola added that the victims were taken to Rolayo Private Hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The statement said, “On March 9 at 9.38 p.m., there was an industrial accident at Phoenix Metal Company in Ogijo.”
“Eyewitness accounts state that the explosion was caused by a cylinder explosion that occurred at the melting point location, injuring staff members. The explosion caused window frames to fracture because of the vibrations it caused in the surrounding dwellings.
“Youths from the community attempted to attack the company, but there were police officers and an Army detachment of 174 battalions in Odogunyan Ikorodu to stop them.
“There is no need for panic; the situation is under control and is being closely monitored. The public will be updated as more information becomes available,”
Recall that a similar incident happened in Ibadan, Oyo state, a few months ago, leading to the death of some people.
