One suspected kidnapper shot dead as others abandoned four victims in Edo

Nigerian Police have killed a suspected kidnapper in Edo State.

Edo State police command shot a man during a bush combing and rescued four kidnap victims.

On Saturday, 20 August 2022, the police operatives received a tip at about 6.10 pm from a kidnapped victim and a team of officers and vigilantes were assembled to comb the forest.

The rescuers ambushed at Iyuku forest, where the incident had occurred, until about 11:30 pm when one of the suspected kidnappers wandered out holding a shotgun.

The unidentified suspect saw the officers and quickly opened fire in a daredevil attempt to escape; however, he was shot and died at the scene.

Police said some members of the gang escaped with gunshot injuries.

Officers recovered a single barrel gun and four live cartridges from the suspect.

Vigilantes and police officers have remained in the vicinity to continue the search for the remaining feeling gang members.

In a separate incident, around Benin-Akure Road, police rescued four victims after credible information.

The police were informed about some suspected kidnappers dressed in military uniform who had emerged from the bush along the Benin-Akure road and intercepted a Toyota Camry car with Reg No. MM528AA and whisked away the occupants into the bush.

A combined team of police officers and vigilantes were mobilized to the scene, and the bush was rigorously combed, leading to the rescue of some of the victims.

Police said the alleged hoodlums opened fire upon sighting them, which led to an exchange of gunfire.

Standard Gazette learned that the subdued suspected kidnapper fled, abandoning four of their victims.

The four victims rescued are; (1) Okolie Chukuka ‘M’ 33yrs, (2) Samson Ayodele ‘M’ 41yrs, (3) Ronke Makinde ’F’ 30yrs and her five years old daughter.

Fierce bush combing is still ongoing to rescue one of the kidnapped victims left and to Arrest the fleeing gang.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, has again reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the state is safe and peaceful for all residents.
