The Nigeria Police have confirmed the arrest of a Fulani warlord, Iskilu Wakili, who is allegedly responsible for the killing, abduction and heightened insecurity in Oyo communities.

The arrest was made in the early hour of Sunday, 7 March 2021, by a joint task force comprising of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, the police and other local vigilantes in the communities.

The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer Fadeyi Olugbenga confirmed the arrest.

“Yes, (he was arrested) with three others,” Fadeyi told TheCable.

A brief video posted by one user on Facebook showed how Wakili was arrested. In the same video, Wakili kept mum when he was asked several questions.

But the poster claimed OPC arrested the Fulani warlord under the leadership of Gani Adams.

He was said to be arrested inside the Igangan forest.

A security operative Oguntola Adeola also told Thecable that Wakili was arrested after a gun battle.

“Wakili has been parading himself as a Fulani warlord in Ibarapa area. He was arrested after a gunfight with the Oodua Peoples Congress and other security groups early on Sunday. He was arrested with three of his fighters,” Adeola said.

He reportedly added, “He said he was sick and had been taking treatment in Cotonou, Republic of Benin. He also said he only returned to Ibarapa from Cotonou on Saturday, but it was a lie. After arrest, he stopped talking to us.”

Wakili had challenged a popular youth leader known as Sunday Ighoho after he issued an evacuation notice to herders in Iganga and Ibarapa area.

Ighoho had blamed the herdsmen for the heightened insecurity in Oyo State.

In what seems like a daring attack, a thug attacked some residents in the area, which led to the sudden departure of the Fulani community leader Seriki Saliu in Ibarape.

Asked if Igboho joined the OPC during the Fulani warlord arrest, Adeola said he could not confirm his involvement.

“I cannot tell you what Igboho did, but we all know what he had done before now to set the tone for the herdsmen evacuation. The events are interwoven,” he added.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Mr Gani Adams, through his special assistant, Kehinde Aderemi, confirmed the arrest while commending the security operatives’ effort for making it possible.

“I am happy that the notorious kidnapper had been captured alongside three others. It is a good development and a positive signal to other criminal elements that the South-West is no longer an abode for bandits, kidnappers, and criminal herders,” Adams said.

“I commend all the members of the joint security team that has made this possible because, with the video at my disposal, it was purely a neat job.”

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, the spokesperson for the Miyetti Allah Association, Mr Suleiman Mohammed, also confirmed the arrest.

He said OPC and Amotekun visited Wakili’s house and killed one of his children and two other people.

He also claimed Sunday Igboho was among the people who arrested Wakili in Igangan.

Suleiman also alleged that OPC and Amotekun burned many houses and cows, quoting a report that he heard.

He said the association would do everything within its power to free Iskilu Wakili because he is one of Oyo’s branch leaders.
