Reading Time: 2 minutes

Will Smith has issued an apology for slapping comedian Chris Rock live on stage during the Oscars.

Comedian Chris Rock took the stage at one point to give a few jokes. He began by discussing Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and then moved on to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

He made fun of the actress's bald head which is due to alopecia, by asking when the G.I. Jane sequel would be released.

Will Smith rushed to the stage shortly after the joke was told and struck the comedian across the face.

"Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth," he said as he returned to his seat.

"I want to apologize to the academy; I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees and everybody.

Love will make you do crazy things," Will Smith wrote on his Twitter handle.

Smith later revealed that Denzel Washington told him that "The devil comes to you when you are at your highest."

“I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people,” Smith said. “I know, to do what we do, we’ve gotta be able to take abuse.

“You’ve gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you’ve gotta be able to have people disrespecting you. You’ve gotta smile and pretend that that’s okay.”

Comedian Kathy Griffin wrote: “Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian. Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.”
