The Nigerian police have commenced an investigation after an accident involving a motorcyclist in the Iseyin area of Ibadan. This tragic incident is now being referred to as the Ibadan Border Patrol accident.
Umar Yahuza, 25, died in a lone accident at a Border Patrol checkpoint along the Iseyin along Oyo Road.
The police command said Yahuza was rescued and taken to Fadok Hospital, but later died at about 7:30am on Saturday, 2 May, due to the severity of his injuries sustained from the Ibadan Border Patrol accident.
The accident led to a protest from the commercial motorcyclists alleging that the police had a hand in his death. The protest was brought under control with the help of the community leaders.
Two officers – Assistant Superintendent and Inspector attached to the Border Patrol Unit have been detained pending further investigation.
The case would be transferred to the SCID, according to the police command, while assuring that “any officer found culpable will be appropriately sanctioned in accordance with the law.”
The Commissioner of Police reiterated the command’s commitment to accountability and transparency, urging calm as investigations continue.
