A fired police officer was one of the two alleged point-of-sale thieves who were set ablaze in the state on Wednesday, according to the Enugu State Police Command.

However, after claims that one of the alleged POS robbers who was recently set on fire by a mob near Bissala Road, Independence Layout in the state, was a serving policeman in the New Haven Police Division, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, rejected the claims.

The state's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, provided a statement on Friday, November 11, 2022, in which the CP referred to the news as being false.

The command said available records only revealed that one of them, identified as Ogbobe Benjamin, has long been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force as a Police Constable, for acts of indiscipline.

State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department is ordered to carry out a discreet investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and those involved.

“No matter the circumstance, resorting to self-help to carry out acts of jungle justice in such a manner, without recourse to extant laws and the criminal administration system, is totally condemnable and tantamount to the commission of a crime in itself,” the Commissioner further stated.
