In response to the worsening electricity supply situation across the nation, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has issued summonses to the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Alhaji Sule Ahmed Abdulazeez.

Expressing concern over the declining power supply, the Minister has called for a meeting in the coming week with these key figures to address the issues contributing to the deteriorating electricity situation in their respective regions and explore lasting solutions.

The summonses were delivered in a letter signed by Engineer B.U Mustapha, the Director of Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power.

Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser, Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister, conveyed the Minister’s stern position, stating, “These two DISCOs have been summoned due to the worsening power supply situation in their regions despite improved supply from TCN.”

While acknowledging challenges such as gas shortages, the Ministry has been pressuring Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance performance, resulting in a recent increase in power generation to over 4000MW.

However, the Minister emphasized that certain distribution companies were deliberately avoiding power supply from TCN, and incidents of vandalism in Abuja, Benin, PortHarcourt, and Ibadan regions were exacerbating the situation.

Looking ahead, the Minister declared a focus on compelling all DISCOs to meet expected performance standards.

He warned that willful non-performance could lead to severe punishment or even license revocation.

The Minister directed TCN to commence immediate repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.

Recalling the Minister’s recent supervisory visits to power generating plants, including Kainji hydro power plant, Benue and Taraba States, Olorunshogo and Omotosho thermal plants, and Ihvobor and Azura power plants, the statement highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies.

This initiative is anticipated to alleviate the challenges faced by electricity consumers nationwide by improving generation levels.

The Minister urged patience from electricity consumers while efforts are underway to turn the situation around, assuring that the government is actively working towards resolving the issues plaguing the power sector.
