Tragedy struck at Idumoza community in Uromi, Esan North-East local government area of Edo State, as a proposed one-storey building intended for a hotel facility collapsed, killing the owner of the property while the workers managed to escape.

Some eyewitnesses who have an account of what transpired sympathised with the victim and blamed the incident on substandard materials.

Building collapses are a recurring problem in Nigeria with increasing frequency and severity.

However, a report by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), though it doesn’t offer specific details for Edo State, indicates that between January and July 2024, 22 buildings collapsed across Nigeria, with 42 deaths recorded.

On Friday evening at Idumoza community in Uromi, the administrative headquarters of Esan North-East local government area of Edo, a proposed one-storey hotel building already at roofing level collapsed, trapping the owner, Mr. Harrison Isesele, to death as he was said to be inspecting the ongoing work for the day, while the workers escaped.

Some eyewitnesses, while sympathising with the victim and his family, blame the incident on the non-use of specified materials.

They said it was very unfortunate that the sad incident claimed the life of the owner.

“We just heard the collapse and we rushed there saw the workers outside while the owner of the collapsed building was not fortunate but died before je could be rescued”.
