The Sokoto State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on security agencies to investigate an alleged stampede in Senator Aliyu Wamakko’s house.
A security source from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Sokoto State command, who led some personnel to the scene of the incident, confirmed that no fewer than nine persons died, including an official of the command, while over 30 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
According to a statement signed by the publicity secretary of the party in the state, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the party said the incident happened during the distribution of Sallah items by the former governor of the state, Senate Aliyu Wamakko, at his residence.
“We have been informed of the regrettable stampede that occurred at the Gawon Nama area of Sokoto, at the residence of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Senator representing Sokoto North. The stampede occurred during the distribution of Sallah items to crowds of people, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries.
“We would like to convey our profound sorrow for the incident and offer our sincere condolences to the families of the ten or more individuals who lost their lives while hoping for the well-being of those who were hurt at the scene of the unfortunate event.
However, to prevent another unpleasant incident like this one, the PDP wants to urge security agencies to begin a full inquiry into the situation. It has happened at the same location before due to shoddy planning that did not consider the safety of human lives.
“Our party feels that instead of the dehumanizing practice of giving out cheap items at the expense of people’s safety, and instead of the people receiving real dividends of democracy that will lift them out of poverty, they should receive genuine democracy.”
The party, therefore, demanded the payment of compensation to the families of those who allegedly lost their lives and others who were injured during the incident.
Recall that the Senator, in addition to opening his residence for the less privileged to break their fast, also distributed different clothes, especially for the less privileged, to celebrate the upcoming Sallah celebration.
The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Sokoto State command, ASP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the stampede but could not confirm the number of casualties at the time of filing this report.
