The arrest of some serving and dismissed police officers of the Edo State Police Command, alongside civilians involved in a well-organised criminal syndicate responsible for serious crimes, including abduction and extortion, has been commended by residents.
They say the latest action by the police has brought a sense of relief and renewed confidence, while also calling for sustained efforts to tackle illegal activities.
Ten suspects, including five serving police officers, one dismissed officer, two mini-bus drivers, and a POS operator, were apprehended following several complaints from members of the public alleging harassment and extortion by individuals posing as police officers.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikọedem, the suspects reportedly operated along the Teboga axis off Aduwawa, where they unlawfully stopped unsuspecting citizens, forcefully conveyed them across various locations within Benin City, and compelled them to withdraw money through Point of Sale operators under duress.
“Their illegal activities have given the police a bad name, and our team was able to fish and apprehend them and they would made to face the wrath of the law”
Reacting to the development, some residents commended the move by the Command, noting that the issue of extortion and harassment by uniformed personnel is long overdue for decisive action.
The Edo State Police Command is also calling on all victims who may have encountered or fallen prey to the syndicate to come forward with useful information to aid further investigation and prosecution.
