Commercial activities were temporarily grounded for several hours on Tuesday morning in Ekpoma, the administrative headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, as residents and shop owners trooped out in their numbers in protest over the incessant kidnapping activities in recent times, which have rendered the town almost deserted.
However, the ever-busy Ekpoma market square was barricaded as the protest lasted.
Residents, shop owners, and market women on Tuesday abandoned their stores to join the anti-kidnapping protest, which coincided with the Ekpoma market, leaving their wares in solidarity.
The protesters complain that in recent times, activities of kidnappers have become a free-for-all business in Ekpoma, as they can now handpick people in their homes.
“We are appealing to relevant authorities to intervene in the menace of kidnapping across Esan Land and Ekpoma in particular, as we are no more free to d o our business as nobody knows the next victim.”
The spate of kidnapping in Ekpoma and its environs has been on, as security agencies have been accused of not doing enough to curtail the ugly menace.
Reacting to the Edo State police image Maker Moses Joel Yamu, who spoke in a telephone interview, said the police are doing everything possible to wipe out kidnapping all over the state.
