Police corporal Cliff Ombati, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) lance corporal Ben Shiundu and prison warder Eugine Shivachi were arrested in Nairobi CBD for conducting illegal arrests.

Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the officers had embarked on an arresting spree targeting motorcyclists, who they arrested and demand bribes from them.

Things made a u-turn for the trio after they arrested one of the motorcyclists, harassed him, and took his motorcycle before demanding ksh4,000 (about US$40).

Two police officers confronted them after being alerted by a bystander. A fight ensued between the two groups forcing members of the public to help the officers arrest the suspects.

“It took the combined efforts of the officers on patrol and members of the public, to subdue the three miscreants who had left their places of duty hundreds of kilometers away, to reap from the sweat of hardworking Kenyans,” said the DCI.

The KDF officer has been handed to the military police, whereas the remaining two are in police custody awaiting arraignment.

The two officers in patrol sustained severe injuries during the brawl and received treatment in a Nairobi health facility.
