Edo State secondary school teachers on grade level 16 yesterday refused to participate in the ‘competency’ test organised by the state government.
About 900 teachers and other civil servants in various ministries were expected to participate in the test but only about 200 did.
It was gathered that some teachers who came for the examination were chased away by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), but that some spurned the directives of ASUSS and participated in the test.
Addressing journalists, the union’s secretary, John Omon Isibor, said the way they were invited for the examination gave them concern about the intention of the state government as the test was supposed to be for new job seekers and not for old workers about to retire.
Governor Godwin Obaseki who spoke to journalists after monitoring the exercise, said many teachers did not understand details of the test. He said, “It is not competency test. The test is part of promotion exercise. The first one we had was for levels 16 and 17. From that examination, some of them were very good and we used them to fill existing vacancies of directors and permanent secretaries. It is not compulsory. If you want to be promoted, you can write. We are giving everybody opportunity to excel.
