Despite the removal of fuel subsidies and the resulting economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians, the Nigerian government continues to allocate extravagant funds for housing allowances for members of the National Assembly.
According to findings from The Standard Gazette, the housing allowances for lawmakers may cost the country approximately N5.87 billion yearly.
Based on data obtained from the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission, the allowances cover accommodation (200% of basic salary), domestic staff (75% of basic salary), utilities (30% of basic salary), house maintenance (5% of basic salary), wardrobe (25% of basic salary), and furniture (300% of basic salary).

The breakdown of the allowances shows that the housing allowances for Senators will cost about N1.38 billion annually. However, the specific amounts for the Senate President and Deputy Senate President were not disclosed. The allocation only covers the allowances for the 107 senators.
Similarly, the housing allowances for House of Representatives members will amount to N4.49 billion per year. The amounts for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were also not disclosed. The allocation covers the allowances for the 356 House of Representatives members.
The total annual allocation for the National Assembly’s housing allowances raises concerns, as it amounts to billions of naira. With an annual allocation of N5.87 billion, the government will spend N23.48 billion on lawmakers’ accommodation over a four-year period.
The allocation for housing allowances comes at a time when the prices of residential apartments in high-end areas of the Federal Capital Territory have surged by at least 60% due to the high demand from newly inaugurated members of the National Assembly.
This stark contrast between extravagant spending on housing allowances for government officials and the economic hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians due to the removal of fuel subsidies raises questions about the government’s priorities and the need for equitable distribution of resources.
