A wave of shock and fear gripped the Iyekogba community in Benin City on Tuesday after 16-year-old Osarobo Evbuoman was allegedly beaten to death by a group of students from Iyekogba Secondary School.
Another 17-year-old boy, Osamudiamen Kayode, was seriously injured in the same attack, while a third boy who was with them is still missing.
The brutal assault took place after school hours. Unconfirmed reports suggest a dispute over a girlfriend may have triggered the violence.
According to Lester Evbuoman, elder brother of the deceased, Osarobo was not a student of Iyekogba Secondary School but had attended a nearby private school. He had been invited by his friend, Osamudiamen Kayode (a student of Iyekogba Secondary School), to collect his WAEC result. Shortly after picking up the result and attempting to leave the school premises, the group was ambushed and attacked by other students.
The father of the injured survivor, Mr Oriakhi Kayode, described his son’s condition:
“My son is in an unstable condition as a result of this wicked act. He is traumatised and still not thinking straight. I can’t imagine what students of this age are fighting over. It is very sad.”
Following complaints by the victims’ families, officers from Iyekogba Police Division stormed the school and arrested several students believed to be involved.
On Wednesday, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, and the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, visited the area and the police division. While some of the arrested students were later released to their parents, both commissioners assured residents that a thorough investigation is ongoing and anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner for Education urged parents to closely monitor their children and wards to prevent similar tragic incidents from recurring.
As of the time of this report, the police investigation continues, and the family of the deceased is demanding justice.
