The tragedy was averted on Saturday as Three persons were rescued alive when a storey building collapsed at Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
However, residents blamed the incident on structural defects.
The building collapsed during the early morning rain and was reduced to rubble.
Residents in the area gathered to catch a glimpse of the incident and possibly render assistance.
Rescue officials from the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Edo State Emergency Management Agency, EdoSEMA, Federal Fire Service, UNIBEN Fire Service, Edo State Fire Service and the Red Cross were on the ground swiftly, instilling confidence in the public and salvaging the situation.
Some sympathisers, including the state legislator representing the area and Majority Leader, EDHA, Charity Aiguobarueghian, described the incident as shocking and blamed it on structural defections.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence and Federal Road Safety Corps were also on the ground to ensure any further breakdown of law and order.
Those rescued have since been rushed to the hospital.
