A tragic incident claimed the lives of two young men in Kano on Friday morning after they drowned in a waterlogged ditch while reportedly pursuing a debtor.

The incident occurred along Ring Road, opposite Dorayi Babba, and was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service.

According to the Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Fire Operations (ACFO) Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, a man identified as Garba Sani reported the emergency at about 9:36 a.m.

The victims, identified as 27-year-old Saifullahi Muhammad and 29-year-old Halifa Abdullahi, both residents of Gwammaja quarters, were said to be chasing a debtor from Kofar Ruwa Market when they accidentally fell into the ditch.

“Our rescue team from headquarters responded promptly and retrieved both men from the water unconscious. They were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, but were unfortunately confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Abdullahi said.

The remains of the deceased were later handed over to Inspector Halifa Muhammad of the Kuntau Police Division for further investigation.

In a separate incident earlier the same day, the Fire Service rescued two well-drillers trapped in a well at Danmaliki village, near Chalawa Filling Station.

The distress call was received at about 6:01 a.m. from a staff member, SFS Usman Aminu. The victims were reportedly overcome by heat and lack of oxygen while working inside the well.

“They were successfully rescued alive and found to be in stable condition. They were later handed over to the Ward Head of Danmaliki, Alhaji Ali Alkasim,” Abdullahi added.

The Kano State Fire Service has since urged the public to exercise caution around water bodies and wells, especially during the rainy season, and to report emergencies promptly to help save lives.
