Kenya’s former president, Uhuru Kenyatta, hailed the US-brokered ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Kenyatta, the facilitator of the East African Community (EAC)-led Nairobi Peace Process, expressed confidence that the truce will be extended indefinitely to facilitate peace-building.

He also hopes that the ceasefire will bring to an end senseless killings in the troubled Eastern DRC.

“H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta welcomes the US-brokered ceasefire and hopes that it will be extended indefinitely in order to facilitate the peace-building process and to put an end to the senseless killing and suffering in the eastern DRC. Former President Kenyatta looks forward to the resumption of the Nairobi process and the final brokering of lasting peace in the troubled region of the eastern Congo,” said Mr. Kenya in a post on Facebook.

The White House said on Monday that the parties participating in the fighting in eastern DRC had agreed to a 72-hour truce supported by both the DRC and Rwanda.

According to Adrienne Watson, a White House National Security Council spokesman, the U.S. government would utilize its intelligence and diplomatic capabilities to monitor the behaviour of military forces and non-state armed groups during the ceasefire.
