A University of Benin, UNIBEN, undergraduate has been shot dead in his JLK Mercedes Benz while driving out of the main gate of the campus.
The identity of the student, though, has not been released, but the attack happened Sunday evening at the main gate of the Ugbowo campus.
Eyewitnesses said the student was shot at close range by masked gunmen who later fled the scene.
The victim had reportedly finished his exams in the Political Science department about an hour earlier.
Two other victims in the JLK Mercedes-Benz who survived the attack were said to have been rushed to the University of Benin Health Care centre.
Personnel from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters were at the scene evacuating the remains of the victim while onlookers surrounded the scene.
The DPO of the Divisional Police Headquarters, SP Emmanuel, said it was still too sketchy and is to ascertain the cause of the death, and no official statement can be released yet pending proper investigation.
However, another student was allegedly chased with a machete at the Social Science Lecture Theatre the day before at the same UNIBEN, though escaped unhurt.
The Edo State Police Command is yet to comment on the issue.
Meanwhile, the Management of the University of Benin has dissociated its staff and students from the violent clash leading to the death of a young man outside the Ugbowo Campus of the Institution.
The incident occurred outside the campus, at the institution’s main gate, on Sunday.
The Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, in a statement, said preliminary reports indicate that the incident is a fallout of cult activities outside the campus and does not involve any university staff or student.
“Management of the University, while expressing regrets over the loss of life, urges members of the University community to remain vigilant and to go about their academic activities on campus peacefully.”
