- Two suspected Victims hit by stray bullets
Police in Edo state shot dead an alleged vicious kidnapper, rescued one person.
Men of the Edo state police command on 9 January 2022 shot dead a notorious kidnap suspect.
The incident happened around Ogbemudia farms on Benin-Ekpoma road in Edo state.
Standard Gazette learned that at about 9 pm, operatives of the Edo State Police Command, in collaboration with the military acting on credible information, about some hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers came out from the bush at Okwo village near Ogbemudia farms on Benin-Auchi Road and started shooting sporadically on unsuspected vehicles.
On receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ehor Division CSP Benefa Benjamin, immediately mobilized his team of police operatives and the military at Ehor to the scene where the combined team of operatives sighted a Passat GL vehicle with Reg. No. BEN 628 MS veered off the road and rammed into a palm tree, with the driver yet to be identified.
The driver was met on the steering unconscious with bullet wounds on his head and Thigh.
One female passenger identified as Awoma Jerry, 28, also had an injury on her Knee and Thigh due to the sporadic shooting from the armed hoodlums. The two victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The police then combed the bush in the locality, and at about 11 pm, the armed hoodlums were sighted in the bush with some victims.
Upon sighting the team of operatives, the hoodlums engaged them in a gun duel, but the police team overpowered them, which led to the rescue of seven victims - five males and two females.
The rescued victims were identified as Lucky Ebuade, Flora Ebude, ASP Joseph Okoh, Tina Okiti, Adamu Danusa, Hassan Mohammed and Tolba Masamavi. They have since been profiled and asked to continue on their journey.
One of the kidnappers was shot dead on the spot during the process.
One locally-made gun and one live cartridge were recovered from him. Other gang members escaped with various degrees of bullet wounds.
Intensive bush combing is still ongoing with the aim of arresting other fleeing gang members.
A statement by the Edo state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bello Kontongs, said the Edo State Police Command operatives had rescued six kidnapped victims.
The rescue operation was in collaboration d with the local vigilante and hunters who acted on information that suspected kidnappers had accosted a Toyota Hiace Bus with Reg. No. AB 14 TR was driven by one Abdullahi Adamu and kidnapped ten (10) passengers along Igueben Opoji road while conveying corpse from Taraba State to Iruekpen in Edo State for burial on 10 January 2022 about 12:45 am.
On receipt of the information, the divisional police officer (DPO), Ekpoma Division CSP Bukoye Oyegbemi, immediately swung into action and mobilized a team of police operatives, local vigilante and hunters to the scene and embarked on bush combing operation during which six victims were rescued unhurt. efforts are still ongoing to rescue the remaining four victims and further arrest the suspected kidnappers©Standard Gazette, 2021.
