Residents of Lokoja, Kogi State Capital, were abruptly thrust into a state of confusion as the state government, without warning, disconnected the services of one of the largest mobile networks, MTN.
The government’s action brought the daily activities of banks, companies, and individuals who rely on the mobile network for their communication to a standstill.
Many were aggrieved over the situation as the network went off for over three days, leaving people to battle with other ineffective mobile lines.
Many people who use the MTN were completely cut off from reaching out to the people or business customers
The residents condemned the government for such treatment without giving caution to the people to be prepared for the eventuality.
“This is sadly very inhuman; why would the government make a decision without notice to the people to be prepared?
“Last time, they shut down all the First bank branches in the state over non-payment of taxes and many businesses were paralyzed.
“The government need to engage private institutions in the state on dialogue, especially the ones rendering essential services to the people before taking such draconian actions that affect lives”, a Public commentator, Samade, stated.
The face-off between the state government and the communication giant placed a heavy demand on the residents of Lokoja because MTN was the major network available there.
Many people were at the crossroads because the rival Glo network, which was very popular there, was not too effective due to erratic services.
