When a Masquerade Ran For His Life

  • The heavenly ancestor from Ibadan just received a beaten.

Masquerades among the Yorubas belong to a folklore that describes them as heavenly beings (ara orun), however when pandemonium broke out in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Thursday evening, even the ‘ara orun’ realized he was a mere mortal who was never going to escape to heaven.

It all started when hoodlums attacked popular masquerade called Oloolu in Ibadan.

Two persons were feared killed while one was missing according to Punch as gun-wielding hoodlums pursued the masquerader who is believed to possess metaphysical powers and his followers in the Oje area.

It was learnt that although the Oloolu usually goes out around July, the masquerader went out on Thursday around 6pm to make some rituals to appease the gods so that rain could fall. He was however prevented from laying the sacrifice at the designated spot.

The hoodlums caned and shot at the masquerader and his followers according to an eye witness account of the Oloolu’s follower.

He said, “The hoodlums came and started shooting. They were led by one youth called Star Boy. They injured many people but Baba (Oloolu) was not injured.
