After the death of Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru in the ill-fated military aircraft which crashed on Friday, a section of Nigerians have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to not allow nepotism in the selection of the new COAS, instead should appoint the highest ranked officer in the army, Maj Gen Ben Ahanotu. This view was made by Ohanaeze Youths.

The youths said that appointing the highest Igbo ranking officer in the Nigerian army would help to unite the country.

The group said it has learnt that Major General Ben Ahanotu, from Anambra State, is the second in command to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

In a statement by its President-General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and the Secretary-General, Comrade Obinna Achionye, OYC said that Ndigbo had suffered enough injustice in Nigeria. They maintained that the fragile state of the nation and the agitations of separatists groups is as a result of what some segments see as marginalization by the Buhari administration.

The group noted that it is in the best interest of Nigeria’s unity to appoint Maj. Gen. Ben Ahanotu as the next COAS.
