A social political group, the Grand Council Of Yoruba Youths (Agbarijo Egbe Odo Yoruba) has slammed Oyo state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for hoarding COVID-19 palliatives meant for vulnerable and poor people in the state.
The group chided the governor for speaking with both sides of his mouth, noting that his action smacks off as hypocrisy.
There has been widespread looting of Covid-19 palliatives across the country since last week by angry Nigerians over what many termed as insensitive attitudes to the plight of poor people by some state government.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, the umbrella body of youths in the Southwest through its President, Comrade Awa Bamiji berated the action of state government concerned.
Bamiji decried the attitude to some state governors for keeping the palliatives despite the ravaging hunger in the land.
He lampooned the Oyo state government, who he alleged of storing the palliatives meant for the poor people in the state at the State Secretariat, Agodi, stating that this has been confirmed, even by one of the aides of Governor Makinde.
The statement read in part, “It’s no longer news that the truck loads of the COVID-19 palliatives donated by CACOVID to the State Governments across Nigeria are stored in various warehouses by the State Governors both in the APC and PDP for various reasons known to them, which are now being looted by the #EndSARS hoodlums across Nigeria.
“Politicking crept in, in Oyo State when Engr Akeem Olatunji and Mr Seyi Adisa, the Spokespersons for the PDP, Oyo State and that of Governor Seyi Makinde respectively, started holding brief for their boss, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on the reason why he kept very huge quantities of COVID-19 palliatives, just to make him holier than Pope among his colleagues in Nigeria.
Bamiji pointed Governor Makinde became jittery over the comment by one of his aides, Mr. Michael Ogunsina, during last week Newspapers’ Review Programme on BCOS Radio 98.5 FM that Covid-19 palliatives for Oyo State are stored in Agodi Secretariat.
“Luck ran out of Mr Ogunsina during the programme when people snubbed his usual efforts to start defending Governor Seyi Makinde by saying “His Excellency had a plan to share them for the masses at appropriate period and that we should all condemn EndSARS hoodlums looting the state and private palliatives”.
They asked the governor to tender unreserved apology to the people of Oyo state over this condemnable action.
“It is on this note we call on Governor Seyi Makinde to tender unreserved apology for foisting deadly hunger on the innocent electorate that voted him into power last year through his wicked, uncaring, foolhardy attitude” the statement concluded
