Unidentified people broke into a government storage facility in Gwagwa town in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday and burgled stored food items.

Some residents in the area who spoke to journalists claimed that a large number of youths invaded the warehouse situated in the Tasha community around 7 am to loot bags of maize and grain.

A resident, who identified himself as Jaafar Aminu, said the looting continued until 9 am without restriction.

He further alleged that some residents, as well as persons from neighbouring Jiwa and Karmo towns, partook in the carnage of the warehouse.

The eyewitness said the situation caused a gridlock on the Gwagwa-Karmo road, leading to the Dei-Dei and Jabi axes.

Aminu said many people, including him, sustained injuries at the location due to the struggle to outdo each other.

It was further observed that the hoodlums did not spare the iron rods used as protectors to barricade the site as it was removed and catered away.

Pumping machines and other intervention equipment kept in the warehouse were looted.

The rampaging youths relocated to another place suspected to be housing warehouses to continue their nefarious act until they were stopped by the arrival of Security agencies who tried to disperse them.

The FCT Police Command Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the police were already on the ground trying to control the situation.

Adah further disclosed that the authority will ensure that those behind the criminal act will be arrested and prosecuted to deter others.
