Abdulkadir Haji is the new Senator for Garissa County, North-eastern of Kenya.
Abdulkadir was officially sworn in by the Senate speaker Ken Lusaka on Tuesday morning.
He takes over from his father, Yusuf Haji, who died on February 15, 2021, after a long illness in a Nairobi hospital.
In line with Kenyan Constitution, the Independent and Boundary Electoral Commission (IEBC) had slated Garissa by-election for May 8, 2021.
However, last week the commission in a Gazette notice declared Abdikadir the Senator after no other candidate showed interest in the seat.
The incoming Senator was identified and endorsed by several leaders as the perfect replacement for his father.
Garissa Town lawmaker noted that people have faith in him to deliver.
“Congratulations to Hon. Abdul Kadir Mohamed Haji for the declaration of no contest for Garissa Senate by-election scheduled on May 18, 2021, by the IEBC. We have faith in you that you will deliver to the people of Garissa as their Senator,” said Duale.
Abdulkadir now joins a list of Kenyan politicians who have been elected unopposed, like the Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi, lawmakers Moses Kuria and Kimani Ichung’wa.
