Tensions were high at the Chambers of the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday as Speaker Blessing Agbebaku suspended three members over an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal Officers.
Two members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are suspended.
The lawmakers who were suspended are Okogbe Ojeneh Donald, a prominent member of the PDP representing Akoko-Edo II, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, a key figure in the APC representing Esan North-East I, and Iyamu Bright, a respected member of the PDP representing Orhionnwon II.

Agbebaku said the three who were suspended indefinitely alleged that they plotted to change the house’s leadership.
The Speaker, Agbebaku, made serious allegations against the three suspended members. He claimed that they were being influenced by external forces, including the use of native doctors, to cause chaos and remove the house’s leadership. If proven true, these allegations could have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of Edo State, potentially destabilizing the current power structure.
The Speaker also alleged that some persons brought native doctors into the house at midnight on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, to make some demonic incantations and dropped charms in the assembly complex.
In a scene fraught with tension, the three suspended lawmakers were heard passionately exclaiming, “Mr speaker, you do not possess the authority to unilaterally suspend any member (s) of the house. You must call for votes. Allow members to vote on the matter.” Their protest, brimming with emotion and defiance, underscored the profound divisions within the house.
“You must call for votes. Allow members to vote on the matter, they shouted.
The Speaker, in a sudden turn of events, abruptly adjourned the plenary.
Philip Shaibu was impeached on Monday, 8 April, after months of bad blood between him and his principal, the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki. Obaseki had alleged that Shaibu was disloyal by trying to oppose his interest in the House of Assembly over his ambition to become the governor of Edo State.
The governor also alleged that Shaibu was rubbing shoulders with his political enemies, leading to division and evacuation from the Government House.
On the other hand, Shaibu maintained his argument that his problem with Obaseki was because of his interest in becoming the next governor of Edo State, arguing that he was the best candidate, having worked closely with Obaseki for almost eight years.
