The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has called for an urgent amendment to the law establishing the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), advocating for the inclusion of local governments in crucial revenue-sharing deliberations.
According to ALGON, the current structure of FAAC sidelines local government representatives, excluding them from decisions on the distribution of federal allocations among the three tiers of government.
Speaking to Journalists, the Secretary-General of ALGON, Muhammed Abubakar, stressed the need for legal reforms that would grant local government chairmen a rightful place at the allocation table.

“We have FAAC where money is being discussed. Fine. We are saying that local government chairmen also have the right to be represented in that body,” Abubakar asserted.
He added that while governors and state commissioners of finance are aligned with ALGON on the issue of opening commercial bank accounts for local governments to receive direct allocations, they remain resistant to allowing LGs to participate in FAAC meetings.
“Those are the areas the governors and commissioners are saying no to,” Abubakar explained. “We have held meetings with the Commissioners of Finance, and they are saying they’ll never allow local governments to be on the table where their money will be shared.
