Barely forty-eight hours after a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, endorsed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, an elder statesman, Edwin Clark, has followed suit.

Mr Clark endorsed the presidential candidate at a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Niger-Delta Born politician said he endorsed Obi because he has the qualities "critical to leading the country."

Mr Clark said Obi possed transparency, honesty and trust when he was the Governor of Anambra State.

He, however, called on the candidate to ensure that injustices and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region are addressed if elected.

Mr Clark's endorsement makes it the second high-profile backing Mr Obi has received within the last forty-eight hours.

On New Year's day, a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, wrote an open letter to Nigerians, endorsing the LP candidate.

He said, "None of the contestants is a saint, but when one compares their character, antecedent, their understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job, particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had, Peter Obi as a mentee has an edge.

"Others, like all of us, have what they can collectively contribute to the new dispensation to liberation, restoration, and salvaging of Nigeria.
"One other important point to make about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost."

Obasanjo's endorsement has attracted anger from the camp of the All Progressives Congress and the Presidency, who claimed that the endorsement is not a yardstick to winning the election.

In a statement by Garba Shehu, a senior spokesperson to Mr Muhammadu Buhari, the anti-Buhari letter was out of jealousy for the President.

Mr Clark's backing is a milestone achievement for Mr Obi, who seemed to be the most popular candidate in the race.

A PDP governor, according to Channels Television news, Dr Samuel Ortom, on Tuesday, support the decision of Mr Obasanjo to back the LP candidate, Mr Obi.

According to his media adviser, Terever Akare "strongly recommends Peter Obi to Nigerians as the man who has the capacity to effectively tackle the economic, security and other challenges facing the country".

Mr Ortom said he would have led Mr Obi's campaign if he wasn't a member of a different political party.

The Benue state governor is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, with Mr Atiku Abubkar, the Presidental candidate.

He belongs to five governors, popularly known as G5, protesting against the party to sack the party's National Chairman, Senator Iyochia Ayu, who had been accused of corruption and fixing the PDP primaries in favour of specific candidates.

Other members of the G5 are the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; the Ondo State governor, Seyi Maknde; Enugu governor Ifeanyi Ugwanyi and Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
