In a somewhat expected twist, President Muhammadu Buhari in a meeting with APC Governors on Tuesday informed the Governors that they should support his preferred candidate for the primaries in line with the internal workings of the party.
Buhari made the statement before departing for Spain on a state visit.
"In keeping with the established internal policies of the Party and as we approach the Convention in a few days, therefore, I wish to solicit the reciprocity and support of the Governors and other stakeholders in picking my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023," the President stated.
He also reminded the Governors about how he did not meddle in the choice of candidates at the state levels, giving them the chance to pick their preferred successors.
The APC Presidential screening commenced yesterday as indications emerged that choosing a consensus candidate might set the party on a path of crisis.
The President's choice has since been communicated to the Governors and other delegates.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
