To help prevent electoral violence and ensure a smooth voting process, the Edo State Police Command invited political parties taking part in the August 16 by-election to sign a peace agreement at their headquarters in Benin City on Thursday.
Out of the nine political parties in the race, only five—APC, ADC, ANPP, AA, and PDP—attended and signed the agreement. Heads of other security agencies, such as the NDLEA, DSS, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Army, Civil Defence Corps, and Correctional Service, were also present.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, in his remarks, reiterated the Command’s commitment to safeguarding the electoral process and warned against any form of violence.
“We are doing this to ensure a violence free by-election the exercise is not a do or die affairs hence we all should have at the back of mind that we brothers from.tbe state before and after election”
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Professor Anugbum Onuaha, who also signed the document, confirmed that electoral materials have already been dispatched in preparation for the poll.
The Iyase of Benin, represented by Chief Jackson Igbinovia, along with some party representatives, called for peaceful conduct during the election.
