Ahead of the 2024 governorship election, the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Doctor Anugbum Onuoha, has warned political parties to desist from public campaigns.
Doctor Onuoha, who warned during a press briefing in Benin City, said any political party involved in a public campaign before April 24, 2024, is acting against the law.
The Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Dr Anugbum Onuoha, who was speaking on the build-up of activities to the Edo State September 2024 governorship election during a press conference, expressed strong concern with the way some political parties have continued to violate the electoral act and electoral time table provided by the commission for the Edo State Governorship election.
Dr Onuoha, who assumed office as the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Edo State in January 2024, said that ahead of the Edo governorship election, some political parties are involved in public campaigns by the display of their aspirant’s billboards in public places and media space, an act he said is against the electoral provisions.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State explained that every political party is expected to be involved in public campaigns from April 24, 2024, through September 19, 2024.
Dr. Onuoha said that political parties who fail to resist the unlawful act will be sanctioned according to the provisions of the law.
He advised political parties to see their primary elections as internal affairs, which are not meant to be publicized.
He said, “I wonder why the political parties are refusing to follow lay down rules and instead are violating the timetable, an act the Commission will not take likely.”
The Edo State Governorship election is scheduled to be held in September 2024.
