The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 16 political parties out of the 18 that initially indicated interest in the Edo governorship election have met the deadline for submitting the names of their candidates to its portal.

This was done after the parties met the March 24th deadline of INEC in holding primaries for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election on September 21, 2024, and for the submitting candidates, respectively.

This confirmation was made by the INEC National Commissioner overseeing the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

Olumekun, however, did not release the names of the parties that failed to meet the deadline, but sources close to the INEC office revealed that the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and Youth Party (YP) are the parties that missed the window.

The three major political parties in the state, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP), were able to submit their candidates within the stipulated period.

Notable nominees include Barr. Dr Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Senator Monday Okpebholo from the APC, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party are running for the position in September.

Olumekun further noted that 16 political parties uploaded their candidates’ nomination forms before the portal’s closure at 6:00 pm on March 24.

Additionally, he outlined plans to publish the personal details of the governorship candidates and their running mates soon by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2020.
