As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for the upcoming governorship election, the Legacy PDP is also renegotiating its relevance in the Party.

Rumours have circulated that the Legacy PDP, led by Chief Dan Orbih, is considering defecting to the All Progress Congress (APC) to oppose Governor Godwin Obaseki’s alleged mistreatment over the past eight years. However, The Standard Gazette has confirmed that this information is unverified.

On Saturday, 13 April, TSG spoke with Barrister Nosa Adams, a member of the Legacy PDP, who stated that defection could be an option if ongoing negotiations with Obaseki and his team do not succeed.

Dousing the speculation, Barr. Adams said, “Legacy is not joining APC yet. We have not discussed or reached that stage yet. Joining APC is not what we are talking about now; we are talking about how to put ourselves together for the Party to do what is necessary.

When pressed further by this journalist if the Legacy group was considering joining the APC at any time, the politician said, “We don’t know yet; it depends on the response from Obaseki. Consultation is going on. By the time they refuse to do what is needed and act appropriately, we will call a conference of all the legacy members across the state. We will know whether we will remain or not.”

However, the Legacy group hopes that Obaseki will turn a new leaf and threatened, “if he doesn’t, we will discuss it collectively.”.

On 22 February 2024, the PDP conducted the governorship primary, declaring Asue Ighodaro the flagbearer.

Mr Ighodaro, according to Adams, “Ighodaro is a protege and political product of Godwin Obaseki,” therefore, the Legacy group is doubtful of the genuity of Obaseki’s ordained candidate turning a new leaf.

Adams said Ighodaro is a gentleman. He is my learnt colleague. I like him, but unfortunately, he entered the Party through a bloody route. I wonder if he will be different. He is a protege and a political product of Obaseki. Obaseki is cancerous.

Today, some members of the PDP, including a former Senator Mathew Uroghide defected to the All Progressives Congress.

Legacy PDP group distanced itself from the defection, saying those who defected were not members of its group.
