Governor of Edo state, Mid West Nigeria, Godwin Obaseki has received the backing a socio political group, Edo Unity league following his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.

Obaseki has recieved flakes and condemnation over his defection, but Edo Unity League said the governor was in order.

The group made this known in a statement on Monday signed by Deacon Henry Olovba, the Director, Diaspora Relations Officer, he said, “It is disgraceful that an article would be written like this to address Governor Obaseki’s dumping of a sinking ship like the APC.

“The political realities in APC did come to light when the rots at the helm of affairs where one man plays “god” was exposed. A decent person should not be seen in a group like that. Governor Obaseki brought APC to its kneels because he was a priceless asset to the Party. You can see for yourself how APC has degenerated into a playground within few days of his exit.

“It is disgraceful that an article would be written like this to address Governor Obaseki’s dumping of a sinking ship like the APC.

” The proponent of this article must have been living in fool’s paradise not to have come to terms with the happenings preceding the defection of Governor Obaseki to the PDP.

“Obaseki was a great team player who believed in conflict resolutions, no matter how complicated the differences are. He stayed intact even with the acrobatics of Comrade Oshiomhole and his co-travellers who were hell bent to frustrate him both in governance and in membership of the APC. A school of thought argues that, the refusal by APC leader Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support Godwin Obaseki’s reelection project may not be unconnected with Edo State Government’s reluctance to sustain Tinubu’s company (HITEC CONSTRUCTION COMPANY) in the questionable Benin Storm Water project, allegedly tinted with corruption.

“He rightly left the APC because he needed a second term for specific reasons, chief of which are to consolidate on the good works he started and to ensure that treasury looters are not given a seamless passage to our common patrimony. One thing that has set us back in Edo State and Nigeria at large is lack of continuity. There are roads massively under construction right now, the educational system is currently undergoing a serious revamp, workers and pensioners are currently being treated as special citizens with their entitlements paid as at when due and above all, the era of thuggery which has been nipped in the bud by the Governor Obaseki’s administration needs to be buried for good. These are some of the valid reasons the people want him back. It is evident from the reactions across the State that Obaseki is the real deal for Edo State and his insistence on a second term has been a political nightmare for the treasury hawks.

“It is not disgraceful to be a one-time Governor if he inherited a healthy State from Comrade Oshiomhole. It would have been a seamless 4 years (first term) if the previous administration had been fair to the Edos by executing projects to standards and specifications. It would have been seamless if the previous administration hadn’t stolen the money meant for the Central Hospital and Benin Storm Water Project. If the previous administration had not kept money meant for workers salaries and pensioners, it would have been a seamless ride for the first 4 years and maybe he would not have sought for a second term. Governor Obaseki inherited unprintable rots which needs to be sandpapered and re-glossed. Above all, if the “god” of APC had not threatened Edo People that Ambode treatment will be repeated in Edo State, maybe we won’t be on this topic right now.

“Edos are great warriors, we do not run in the face of war. If you threaten fire, we will promise and execute water to quench that fire with our strong Will. That is what we have done, so haters, live with it.

“Governor Obaseki is a Party man to the core. This was why he was ready to continue with the contracts being executed by “party men” but at the market price. How do you describe a party man? Is it that Governor who gives out a contract worth N1 for N1,000? That was what was happening in Edo State, that was what happened during Comrade Oshiomhole’s regime and that was what did not happen with Governor Obaseki. If you call his action of not hiking cost of contracts to the detriment of the Edo people “anti-party man?”, then we are happy he is not a party man but the people’s man.

“Governor Obaseki is the most liberal Governor in Nigeria. If he was to use his powers as Governor, Comrade Oshiomhole and many EPM members would not be smelling freedom right now.

“Governor Obaseki’s defection to the PDP is APC’s loss and they will never recover in Edo State and may never recover in Nigeria. History will never be kind to Comrade Oshiomhole for destroying APC in Nigeria.”
