A senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on Edo State Governor, Monday, Okpebholo, accusing him of being “distracted by politics” and failing to address the state’s worsening security crisis.

The party chief, who spoke to The Standard Gazette on condition of anonymity, said the governor had prioritised political manoeuvring over development, leaving residents frustrated and afraid.

“I think he can do better than he is doing. I think he should focus on attracting more people, only if he could fix the security challenges in Edo State. A lot of us will return home or even travel for a holiday. But the way it is now, with the security challenges, I don’t think he is doing enough,” the Chieftain said.

He added: “He is obviously not focussed because he has allowed politics to overwhelm him instead of focussing on development, which is sad.”

When reminded that the governor’s supporters might point to certain projects as evidence of progress, the APC chieftain dismissed the claim outright.

“That’s not true; he has achieved nothing. What has he achieved? Let’s be realistic. Building a bridge, is that an achievement? A local government that knows what it is doing should be able to build a bridge, at least, with the kind of money they are all getting now,” he said.

He insisted the governor was not ready to govern. “We have gotten ourselves into a very bad situation here,” he warned.

The party chieftain went on to explain why many politicians and residents in Edo State have remained quiet despite widespread discontent.

“Because we have a governor who is not exposed, who is very vindictive, so everybody is trying to be careful,” he said.

The Standard Gazette can confirm that this morning, multiple messages were sent to various politicians for comment on the governor’s comments. Every single recipient replied with “no comment.”

The anonymous APC leader said the silence would not last forever. “You can’t talk now, either, because they are all waiting for the primaries in 2027, but it won’t be the same after 2027; a lot of people are going to speak out.

“People are going to want to hold him accountable for all his abuse and the things he has done. Right now, people don’t want to sink the boat, but after 2027, a lot of people are going to speak out.”

He noted that the governor’s second term is scheduled for 2028. “I think between this election and 2028, people are really going to express themselves. This man is going to have a rough time coming back. People are very upset. People are going to fight him publicly. Obaseki did not have a fight; this guy is going to have a major fight.”

The chieftain painted a grim picture of the governor’s future. “All is not well; right now, everyone is just careful because we don’t want to be the person who derails Tinubu from getting his vote.”

He made a striking prediction: I’ll be shocked if he is able to walk freely in Benin. He may run to Abuja the way things are going. He thinks he can buy his way through because Tinubu will be behind him, but it is over for him.”

The APC Chieftain’s anonymous criticism from within the governor’s own party signals deeper trouble ahead for the APC administration in Edo State.
