The Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu announced the postponement on Saturday morning after four hours of meeting with stakeholders including local and international observers.

Prof. Yakubu who broke the news at about 3am on Saturday appealed to Nigerians for a better understanding and for the need to postpone the election sighting logistical problems.

“The independent national electoral commission met on Friday the 15th February 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 general election scheduled for Saturday 16 february 2019, and Saturday 5th March 2019.

Following a careful review of its implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the election as schedule is no longer feasible.

“Consequently, the commission has decided to reschedule the presidential and national assembly elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.

Furthermore, the governorship, state house of assembly and federal capital territory area council elections are scheduled to Saturday 9th March, 2019.

“This will afford the commission the opportunity to appraise, identify challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

“This was a difficult decision to take but necessary for the successful delivery of elections and the consolidations of our elections.”

The Commission is expected to meet with key stakeholders later in the day to address the displeasure that may arose from the postponement.
