The Nigerian CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, says he has not made up his mind to run for the 2023 presidential election.

On Friday, the youths bought and handed Mr Emefiele's presidential nomination form, asking him to join the race.

Barely 24 hours later, the CBN governor says he is undecided on the race.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Mr Emefiele said the decision requires God's intervention.

"I am humbled by the growing interest of those asking that I run for the Office of President in the 2023 general elections: I have not come to that decision," his tweet reads.

He added, "I note and salute the sacrifices of those farmers and patriots going as far as raising personal funds and offering me Presidential Nomination Forms: I thank them most profusely.

"However, Should I answer their calls and decide to seek presidential nomination, I will use my own hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy my own Nomination Forms without proxies in an open and transparent manner in full compliance with the laws and Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"And should I not run for elected office, I will continue to serve and sacrifice for the good people of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

"This is a serious decision that requires God's Divine intervention: in the next few days, The Almighty will so direct."

Emefiele handed over CBN control to Buhari years ago, says Ezekwesili

Not all are happy that Emefiele might run for the 2023 general election.

Nigeria's former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, claimed the Governor had handed over the apex bank's control to President Muhammadu Buhari since he resumed office.

Ezekwesili also alleged that the "ill-advised monetary policies" of the bank in the last seven years were influenced by the ruling party.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the former Minister said the bad monetary policies since the APC came into power were a testament that the bank no longer had independence.

She wrote, "If you did not know all along that Nigeria's serial wrong and ill-advised Monetary Policies of the last 7 years were political because the @cenbank long handed its independence to the Villa @NGRPresident @MBuhari , at least now you know. They've outed themselves. Finally."

The former Minister then asked the CBN governor to resign his position before pursuing his political career.

She tweeted, "The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria @cenbank must now immediately tender his resignation to stop further destroying whatever little remains of the country's monetary policy reputation. Mr Emefele should leave immediately- tonight- to pursue his ill-fated political career."

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, also asked the CBN governor to resign after Emefiele purchased an interest form in Abuja.

His call follows the CBN Governor's intent to engage in partisan politics and contest the 2023 presidential election.

Akeredolu says Emefiele's intention to run is a "joke taken too far".
