The crisis rocking the post-election in Kogi State has taken a dangerous dimension following a massive assault on the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dr Hale Gabriel Longpet.
In a daring assault in the early hours of Friday, armed assailants targeted the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in a very desperate attempt to snuff life out of him.
This comes on the heels of a mob besieging the state office of INEC just a few days ago, indicating a disturbing trend of the heightened security situation in the state.
It took the intervention of combined security personnel that were swiftly deployed to fortify and safeguard the REC’s premises following a distress call.
INEC officials are calling for a thorough investigation, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect both personnel and assets in Kogi State.
The INEC authorities are grappling with the imperative task of ensuring the integrity of electoral processes amidst growing concerns over electoral malpractices in the country.
Unconfirmed reports are pointing accusing fingers at political actors in the state who have shifted the battle for the sole of the state to the Election Petitions Tribunal to be after the life of the resident commissioner for refusing to do their biddings.
Despite no reported casualties, the exchange of gunfire inflicted significant property damage, highlighting the gravity of the incident.
