Mr Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, a former Labour Party House of Representative candidate in the 2023 General Election from Akoko Edo, has been sworn in as Edo State Deputy Governor.
He replaces the impeached former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu.
The ceremony, which Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa performed, was witnessed by dignitaries across the State and beyond.
The 38-year-old Omobayo took his oath of office at 1:33 p.m. at the Festival Hall, Government House in Benin City, under the direction of the State’s Chief Judge.
The decision by the House of Assembly followed allegations of misconduct concerning perjury and leaking of official secrets of the Government against Shaibu, following the adoption of the report of a 7-man Committee set up to investigate the allegations against him.
In a remark, Governor Godwin Obaseki described his tenure as eventful and interesting.
Obaseki, who read from the Bible book of Proverbs Chapter 16, verse 9, prayed to God to direct their path in Government.
He revealed that the swearing-in of the new deputy Governor was in line with Constitutional provisions of the law following the impeachment of the former deputy Governor.
Responding, the new deputy Governor, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, promised to support the Governor in achieving his mandate and being fair to everyone in the State.
In his vote of thanks, the IV of Somorika, HRH Oba Sule Idaiye, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers present on the occasion, likened Obaseki to a magician.
He described the Governor as a man of the people and tasked the new deputy Governor to diligently perform his duties.
He said, “Let me put it on record that the people of Akoko-Edo have seen a new life.
“I think your job as a deputy Governor in this election will count”, he said.
The development has now brought in two Godwins at the helms of the affairs of the Edo State government house.
