The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has accused the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) of frustrating local government autonomy, despite a landmark Supreme Court ruling mandating direct funding for all 774 local councils across the country.
Speaking ahead of a scheduled hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, ALGON Secretary General, Muhammed Abubakar, alleged that a recent directive from the AGF’s office to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) undermines the spirit and letter of the July 11, 2024 Supreme Court judgment.
“The Supreme Court clearly affirmed that local governments are an independent tier of government.
Yet, we’re seeing actions from the AGF’s office that contradict that autonomy,” Abubakar said in an interview.
The group has filed suit number FHC/ABJ/05/353/2025, seeking to compel federal authorities to implement the court-fully.
