Edo State House of Assembly has voted a member representing Orhionwon East Osamwonyi Atu as the new deputy speaker.
This follows the resignation of Maria EDEKO from the office on Monday.
The election of the new deputy speaker, Osamwonyi Atu, follows a motion raised by Yekini Idiaye, a member representing Akoko Edo 1 constituency, and seconded by Kaycee Osamwonyi from Uhunwonde.
However, the current trend was a result of the development that has been playing out in the eight assembly, which was occasioned by the defection of PDP members to APC, thereby making them the majority party in the house, which also necessitated the resignation of the deputy speaker, Maria Edeko.
However, immediately after the election of OSAMWONYI ATU as deputy speaker of Edo state House of Assembly during Monday’s plenary, he took the oath of Office.
The former deputy speaker, Maria Edeko, before tendering her resignation, noted that her decision was formed to follow due process of zoning of positions, hence her noble sacrifice.
The lawmakers, however, showered encomiums on her for her foresight.
Maria Edeko, representing Esan northeast 2, was confirmed as deputy speaker and subsequently chairman of the committee on tenders’ board after her inauguration on July 16, 2023.
The new deputy speaker, Osamwonyi Atu, who was the former Minority whip, is currently representing Orhionwon East constituency.
