The presidency has for the umpteenth time berated ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Affairs, Mallam Garba Shehu described Obasanjo as a “divider- in-Chief”.

Obasanjo during a Speaking engagement last week lampooned the Administration of Muhammadu Buhari over the failing situation in Nigeria while noting that the country was degenerating into a failed state.

And the government on Monday while reemphasizing its displeasure at the former President’s outburst, queried why he was absent at the last council of State Meeting, where all other invited attendees graced the occasion except Obasanjo.

While speaking in an interview on Monday morning, Garba Shehu the spokesman of President Buhari accused Obasanjo of always looking for a government’s weakest point to attack no matter how well the regime was doing.

“This is a man who held himself as the messiah, who thinks he holds the key to the nation’s problem and he knew the danger of ethnicity and tribalism and he is the Convener of meetings of the ethnic and tribal group.

“What are we talking about? Typical of him, Obasanjo never attacks government at the point of its strength, the looks for the moment of its weakness. He did this with Shehu Shagari, with Buhari Military regime, with Ibrahim Babangida, Yar ‘Adua and even Goodluck Jonathan. He looks for the point where you can be destabilized. He chooses the moment and launches the attack. No, he doesn’t mean well and this is sad for the country.

“Is it not ironic that the man who is calling for unity and inclusivity and all of that, was the Convener of fringe groups, divided groups, groups that are about the downfall of the Buhari Administration.

“If he wanted all hands to be on deck, he should have called for all hands to be present. But we are talking about the peculiarity of the groups he called for the meeting. Their views are well known even before they speak. Their views on President Buhari is well defined.

“Chief Obasanjo is a member of the National Council of State, Ira a constitutional body, did you ever ask why he was absent at the last Council of State Meeting? Look at Gen. Gown today, look at Gen. Babangida with his medical condition, Chief Shonekan and his medical conditions, all of them including General Abdulsalami Abubakar and President Goodluck Jonathan were all there. We sent out laptops, invitations to the meeting which was digital. Why was he absent? We want to know.”
